About Kenyan

A Life Rooted in Service

Fourth-generation Washingtonian. Former prosecutor, civil rights attorney, and Councilmember. Kenyan's story is D.C.'s story.

Kenyan is a fourth-generation Washingtonian, attorney, public servant, and proven leader who has dedicated his career to expanding opportunity and delivering results for residents.

Raised in the Stronghold neighborhood of Ward 5, Kenyan was shaped by a tight-knit, working-class community that instilled in him a deep belief in opportunity, accountability, and service. His family's deep history in D.C. gave him an unshakable commitment to fairness, economic opportunity, and justice for every resident in every neighborhood.

After graduating from Jackson Reed High School (formerly Woodrow Wilson H.S.), Kenyan worked for the United States Postal Service — using the money he earned delivering mail to D.C. residents to put himself through UDC, before going on to graduate from Howard University and the University of Maryland School of Law.

After law school, Kenyan began his legal career as a law clerk and then a criminal prosecutor. He later served in the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice under President Obama, protecting constitutional rights and holding those who violated them accountable.

In 2012, Kenyan was elected to represent Ward 5 on the Council of the District of Columbia. After being reelected twice, he won a citywide At-Large Council seat in 2022. During more than 13 years on the Council, he served as Chair Pro Tempore and chaired committees responsible for public safety, the judiciary, economic development, small and local business, financial services, utilities, tourism, sports, and major redevelopment. He built a record of turning bold ideas into law and delivering tangible results for District residents.

Kenyan's legislative record helped make neighborhoods across the city more affordable, safer, and connected to the city's prosperous growth. He authored and passed landmark laws to create and preserve affordable housing, protect tenants and workers, invest in public safety rooted in accountability and prevention, and close racial and economic gaps.

From securing hundreds of millions of dollars for housing and environmental justice to standing up for seniors, small businesses, and working families, Kenyan consistently turned values into action. He remains deeply connected to Ward 5 and the community that raised him, where he continues to raise his two daughters with his wife.

"Effective leadership begins with understanding the root of a problem, bringing the right people together, and doing the hard work required to deliver lasting results."
